God speaks. But how does God speak? Some people say, “If God speaks at all, God only speaks through the Bible.” That’s not true. And yet, God does speak through the Bible. God speaks through the Bible and every means of divine revelation mentioned in the Bible. He leads, teaches, and corrects every person who follows Him. Others have said God speaks primarily through the Bible, but the Bible doesn’t say that either.
Sometimes, we forget to listen to God, or we don’t believe Him. Sometimes, we forget to follow Him, but His plan is that we would come so close to Him that we never forget. God’s will is that we always stay in His presence listening to His voice and yielding to His power for righteousness.
God speaks to people in various ways, both directly and indirectly. When the Father speaks, He always speaks the Living Word. The Living Word is God, and Jesus Christ is the Living Word. Think about that. Ask God to explain it to you. God speaks through the Holy Spirit Who flows from the Father and Jesus. John 16:13 says, “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.” The Holy Spirit is always present. We must learn to seek His presence and yield to His power for righteousness. According to Scripture, here are some of the primary ways God communicates:
- Through the Bible (Scripture)
- Through Conversations with God
- Through the Holy Spirit directly
- Through Creation
- Through Circumstances
- Through People when they are Speaking by the Holy Spirit
- Through Visions and Dreams
- Through Inner Peace or Conviction
- Through Signs and Wonders
- Through Conscience or Intuition
- Through Angels
- Through Prophecy
- Through a Word of Wisdom or a Word of Knowledge
- Discernment of Spirits
- Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues
Ask God to answer these questions.
- Some people believe God speaks only through the Bible. What does the Bible say about this belief?
- What role does the Holy Spirit play in guiding you into all truth?
- How can you make sure you’re staying in God’s presence and yielding to His power for righteousness?
- How is Jesus Christ, the Living Word, different from Scripture?
- How do different ways God communicates to you like visions, dreams, or prophecy, fit in with what the Bible says?
Bonus questions:
- How should you respond to someone who claims to have heard from God in ways that seem unbiblical?
- How should you respond to someone who claims to have heard from God when the Holy Spirit doesn’t tell you that what they say is true?
- How should you respond to someone who claims to have heard from God in ways that conflict with the way God spoke to you?
SEEKING GOD
audio recording for reflection: |
- Pray for the Lord to protect you and keep you in His presence and His presence only.
- Direct your mind toward the Lord only.
- Ask God what He want’s to talk about.
- You can ask God any questions. In all of this, be led by the Holy Spirit. God promises that He will answer you if you ask Him.
- Do not edit or change what God says even if you don’t understand it.
- Reject the lies and receive the truth.
- Take notes.
- Transfer your notes to your journal without editing what God said to you.
Keep in mind that God doesn’t want you to ever disconnect from Him. He wants to flow through you constantly in knowledge, wisdom, and love.
