When Adam and Eve obeyed the devil instead of believing and obeying God, they became servants of Satan. You are a slave of whoever you obey. Since they were slaves, they started thinking thoughts that the devil gave them to think. They started speaking and acting as the devil led them. That was the day sin came into the world. Sin is disobeying God, and a spiritual law says sin causes death and suffering. And sin brought death with it since sin causes death and many other problems. Before sin, there was no death, sickness, or disease. That’s how all the trouble in the world started. It’s why people fight and why people get sick. Everything bad came from the bad choice Adam and Eve made. Adam and Eve had children, and those children were born as slaves to the devil. See how one bad choice can cause problems for a long time? Then those children grew up, got married, and had children who were also slaves of the devil. Many generations passed right up until you were born. People tried to obey God but they couldn’t obey perfectly. And guess what? You had the same problem as all those children before you. That’s why you sometimes do the wrong things.
Although that was very bad news, here’s the good news. The good news is that Jesus came to set us free from slavery to the devil. Jesus had to pay the price to buy us back from the devil. And Jesus did pay the price. Jesus is the Word of the Father, and He is God. He became a man by being born. That’s what Christmas is all about. Jesus had to be perfect, so He never obeyed the devil once but always obeyed His Father. Then, He suffered and died for us since the punishment for sin is death. Now, you can be set free from the devil just by believing Jesus and accepting Him as your Lord and Master.
Ask God to answer these questions.
- What does it mean to be a slave of Satan?
- Why did Adam and Eve start thinking like the devil?
- What is sin? (There are several answers and they don’t conflict with each other. Romans 14:23b)
- Why did sin bring death, sickness, and suffering into the world?
- How did sin cause all the bad things in the world?
Bonus questions:
- Why is it impossible for you to obey God perfectly unless God moves through you by His authority and power?
- How did Jesus set you free from the devil?
- Why did Adam and Eve’s choice to disobey God affect you and all future generations?
- Why can’t you obey God without Christ?
- Why did Jesus need to be perfect (and never sin) to save you?
- How does accepting Christ as Lord set you free from the devil?
- Why does Jesus’ perfect obedience to the point of death pay your debt and set you free?
SEEKING GOD
audio recording for reflection: |
- Pray for the Lord to protect you and keep you in His presence and His presence only.
- Direct your mind toward the Lord only.
- Ask God what He want’s to talk about.
- You can ask God any questions. In all of this, be led by the Holy Spirit. God promises that He will answer you if you ask Him.
- Do not edit or change what God says even if you don’t understand it.
- Reject the lies and receive the truth.
- Take notes.
- Transfer your notes to your journal without editing what God said to you.
Keep in mind that God doesn’t want you to ever disconnect from Him. He wants to flow through you constantly in knowledge, wisdom, and love.
Fishbone (Cause and Effect) Diagram Exercise
Draw a cause and effect diagram that makes sense for this unit. You can read more about cause and effect diagrams in (Fishbone Diagram Info). This simple tool can help you understand how to make things work, why things aren’t working, or why things are happening in a certain way. Review the article and find the most important effect you want to look at and put that in the box on the left end of a line. From the center line, draw one branch for each cause. Think of the branches as streams feeding into the main river that leads to the effect. Let the Holy Spirit lead you in this. (Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.) Take what you learned, your notes or what you produced and videotape yourself. Become a kid influencer for Christ with your own social media platform by uploading your video as God leads.
