The Still Small Voice

Almost everyone wonders about the “still small voice.” That comes from a Scripture where Elijah wanted to hear from God. A strong wind came, then an earthquake, and finally a fire, but God was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. Next came a still small voice speaking to Elijah.

God speaks many ways. In Scripture, He speaks a lot through visions or words of prophecy. The New Testament says you all may prophesy one by one. Often, He speaks through intuition or an inner voice of confirmation. He tells us to ask Him and He will answer us. We can’t always dictate how He will speak.

God speaks to every person. He speaks to atheists. Demons also speak to every person. The carnal minds of every person speak to every person. That means we’re used to hearing God’s voice, demon’s voices, and carnal self-talk. By the way, positive mental attitude empowering statements, motivational phrases, uplifting declarations, and mindset-shifting mantras are all carnal self-talk and will stand in the way of hearing from God. All of these may seem like our own thoughts, but God gives discernment to know the difference between His thoughts and our own thoughts or a demon’s thoughts.

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. (Isaiah 55:8)

You know the difference by the Holy Spirit. Something can sound like it makes sense, but you have a sense that something is wrong. The Holy Spirit lets you know. You can call it a hunch, an inner check, an intuition. As you get to know the Holy Spirit, you will recognize His warnings.

When God tells you something important, He will usually back it up by saying it through several means. You may see something in nature that becomes a spiritual analogy. Then, a Christian friend will say the same thing, and you’ll sense the inner affirmation of the Holy Spirit. Later, as you’re reading the Bible, a verse jumps off the page that confirms the revelation. That’s just one example of how God may reveal something and confirm it several ways.

Ask God to answer these questions.

  1. What is the still small voice?
  2. How does God speak to people today?
  3. What is prophecy?
  4. What does it mean that you can’t always dictate how God will speak?
  5. How can you tell the difference between God’s voice and other voices?

Bonus Questions:

  1. What is carnal self-talk?
  2. How does the Holy Spirit help you know what is right or wrong?
  3. What does it mean when a Bible verse jumps off the page for you?
  4. Why does God use different ways to confirm something important?

SEEKING GOD

audio recording for reflection:

  1. Pray for the Lord to protect you and keep you in His presence and His presence only.
  2. Direct your mind toward the Lord only.
  3. Ask God what He want’s to talk about.
  4. You can ask God any questions. In all of this, be led by the Holy Spirit. God promises that He will answer you if you ask Him.
  5. Do not edit or change what God says even if you don’t understand it.
  6. Reject the lies and receive the truth.
  7. Take notes.
  8. Transfer your notes to your journal without editing what God said to you.
